2008 Audi

 2008 Audi S5

The 2008 model year began with a bang when the German automaker revealed its first-ever supercar at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. The all-new 2008 R8 sports a 420-horsepower 4.2-liter aluminum V8 engine located just behind the driver. The R8 achieves 62mph in less than five seconds. And it’s no surprise that power goes to all four wheels via the company’s legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system. The R8 arrives later this year, priced around $130,000. For something a little more down to earth, later this year Audi will come to market with the all-new A5 coupe and its more powerful sibling, the S5. With Audi’s signature trapezoidal grille, the new 4-seat coupes fit into the lineup between the A4 / S4 and the A6 / S6. Audi has also redesigned its iconic TT coupe and roadster. A difficult vehicle to redesign given its unique styling, Audi has done an excellent job evolving the look while keeping the TT completely recognizable. Available, of course, with quattro all-wheel drive, the TT gets its motivation from either a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter engine or a 250-horsepower V6. Meanwhile, Audi has announced that a few lucky souls will have the opportunity to purchase an RS4 Cabriolet this fall. Sporting the same 420-horsepower V8 as that found in the RS4 sedan, the new high-performance convertible will be sold in very limited numbers—only 300 are expected to be sold in the U.S.

While the Audi is a nice luxery ride, I think I’d rather sport around town in a Mercedes SLK55 AMG or a Dodge Viper SRT10.  I found the most awesome place that lets me do just that…DFW Elite Auto Rental.  Aside from having the best selection of vehicles, they also have an amazing tour that lets me race around in horsepower heaven.  So whatever your mood, visit DFW Elite.

Car Lust–Lamborghini Miura SV

Nowadays supercars aren’t nearly as exotic as they used to be. Oh, they’re more powerful than ever, extremely sophisticated, and ridiculously fast. They’re just not quite as rare or special–as truly exotic--as they used to be.

Nearly ever major automaker has at least one supercar in the family, or at least an über-sportscar with enough potency to make the claim. Porsche, Ford, Mercedes, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Pagani, Ascari, TVR, Noble, Koenigsegg, and many more, have either a supercar or quasi-supercar somewhere in the family tree.

That’s not a bad thing, but the sheer number of supercars, combined with their increasing civility, has robbed them of some of the novelty that once made them special. For me, at least, the debut of yet another swoopy 200-mph supercar doesn’t pop the eyes as it once did, and the electricity and sense of danger supercars used to provide has mostly subsided.

It wasn’t always thus. Before 1966, performance cars largely fell into three camps–muscular but floaty American cars; agile but gutless British sports cars; or fast, comfortable, and bulky grand tourers.

Then Lamborghini unveiled the Miura. The technical specifications boggled the mind and even today deserve a respectful pause–a mid-engined dual-overhead-cam V-12 pumping out a stratospheric 450 horsepower, powering a car underpinned by fully independent suspension with four-wheel discs.

That hardware left behind the Ferrari GTO, probably the closest thing to an exotic supercar at the time, and would serve as the underpinnings of likely the best-known exoticar of all time and the Miura’s successor, the Lamborghini Countach.
A supercar needs more than just machinery to be worthy of the name, though–the Miura established the supercar class with its sheer presence and charisma. The Bertone-penned Miura is long, low, and threatening, with a fierce beauty that broadcast its status as a feral predator of the road. The Miura is still beautiful today–its finely sculpted flanks and raw muscularity stand out even more dramatically among modern cars.

With its exotic specification and brutally beautiful looks, the Miura affects the viewer in primal, instinctive ways and adds electricity to any room.

Now that’s a supercar.
According to the excellent Lamborghini Registry, the breathtaking Miura SV shown here is a 1971 model formerly owned by the Shah of Iran–check out the fascinating back story here. It’s hard to believe, but this Miura SV is still wearing its original Pirelli tires.

Economist Names Suitors on Ford’s Sale of Land Rover and Jaguar

The Economist online has a superb article taken from the print edition on the fate of Jaguar and Land Rover.

Well reported has been Ford’s desire to rid itself of the luxury brands, less well reported who the suitors are. Economist names a few of the most likely.

Among them are four private equity firms and a pair of Indian carmakers.

The article has a beautiful photo of Jaguar’s proposed redesign of its flagship luxury sedan. Looks like it could be as popular a Dallas luxury car rental as our new Aston Martin V-8 Vantage rental or Bentley GTC rental.

Will just have to see what direction the new ownership goes. Stay tuned!

Hummers Destined For Iraq May Get Additional Armor

In response to more deadly tactics by our enemies in Iraq, AM General, makers of the Humvee, has developed a new “Frag Kit 6” armor package. The new armor package is designed to defeat specialized explosively formed projectile munitions that can pierce current Hummer armor.

According to an article posted on military.com written by Christian Lowe, Frag Kit 6 is an improvement on Frag Kit 5 that was designed primary as a counter measure against roadside bombs detonated under the vehicle.

The new armor kit fits over the existing armor of the M1151, the most heavily armored Humvee design fielded in combat. According to the article, the new armor uses a combination of metals and spacing to protect the crew from explosively formed projectile munitions.

The package, designed by the Army Research Lab, has its drawbacks. It adds 1000 pounds to the weight of the vehicle and a foot to each side of the truck in width. In addition, the doors on the new design are so heavy that troops may need mechanical assist to open and close them.

Although, AM General does not yet have an order to produce the Frag Kit 6 configured Hummer, it has taken the steps necessary to prepare to produce the design if the Army approves it.

AM General’s plant in South Bend is cranking out about 80 up armored Hummers per day currently.

Those who need to rent an armored Hummer for personal use can have a rental armored Hummer delivered nationwide by DFW Elite Auto Rental.

2008 Infiniti M35 and M45

Infiniti’s likable mid-sizer adds a V-8 AWD variant and gets a slight restyle.

BY STEVE SILER, August 2007

Picture this: You’re milling about the 2007 Pebble Beach Concourse d’Élégance, and a brand-new car sits among the old: the 2008 Infiniti M. Spokesmen jump up and down—calmly, ahem—explaining that it’s new, but you hardly notice any changes from the M you have seen for the past two years on the road. But since you are fond enough of the ’07 M35/M45, you take a closer look.

On the outside, there are restyled 18- and 19-inch wheels and a new front bumper. You nod in approval toward the improved rear end, which dons a new, sculpted rear bumper, quad exhaust tips, and streamlined taillamp graphics. Inside, the wood elements have been moved around a bit, and there is a new optional feature or two for techies, including a 9.3-gig hard-disk infotainment system.

New M45 AWD (M45x)

But no, don’t move on to the Delahayes just yet, they say. The biggest news for the ’08 M involves stuff you can’t see, and you’re led toward an M45. This one has all-wheel drive, you’re told. Previously, all-wheel drive was offered only on the M35x, but now Infiniti has found a way for it to cope with the bigger motor, rendering the M45x better able to compete with such vehicles as the Audi A6 4.2 and Volvo S80 V-8, particularly in the Snowbelt. Now that’s worth a sip of champagne right there.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Reviews

Rants and Raves: 2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata - Features

1 | 2

Dates in fleet: 8/3/07 to 8/17/07

August 2007
ERIK JOHNSON

It had been a while since I’d driven a Miata, and this was the first time I’d had a chance to spend more than a few minutes with the power hardtop version. I’d forgotten how great this car really is, from the fantastic steering and the positive-feeling shifter to the ride quality, which can be considered downright supple if you factor in the car’s miniscule wheelbase. The most amazing part, however, is the power hardtop. It makes the MX-5 true year-round transportation—albeit for those without kids underfoot—and takes up no more room than the traditional cloth roof when folded. Thanks to the hardworking folks who pulled off this feat of engineering, I was never forced to make a compromise over an entire weekend with the car. It served admirably from the golf course (I put my clubs in the passenger seat, but could have probably wedged them in the trunk if I’d bothered to try) to the hardware store, where the trunk opening was—to my surprise—large enough to swallow a brand-new, still-in-its-box 3000-pound-rated floor jack.

SCOTT MOSHER

You might call me a sun worshiper. Yeah I know its bad for my skin, but I lay out anyway. I’m a previous owner of a Del Sol and loved the hard-top aspect of that car.

Living in L.A. and having a cloth top for a daily driver is asking for trouble. Having a cloth top in Michigan also has its downsides, as you can imagine.

The power-retractable-hardtop on this is ingenious. It’s super-fast and solves all my dilemmas. What an engaging roadster. With this latest gen I can sit in the driver’s seat and not have my forehead exposed to the elements. Many Miata-philes feel the increased size and weight are unforgivable sins, but I disagree. At six-foot-one, I am taller than average but even so I know plenty of gearheads at or above my height.

A True Exotic Car

What a sexy machine!  Now you true exotic car buffs can you identify this true beauty?

The author of the story for this car gives some pretty sweet details on what is a true exotic car.

Nowadays supercars aren’t nearly as exotic as they used to be. Oh, they’re more powerful than ever, extremely sophisticated, and ridiculously fast. They’re just not quite as rare or special–as truly exotic--as they used to be.

With its exotic specification and brutally beautiful looks, this exotic affects the viewer in primal, instinctive ways and adds electricity to any room.
Now that’s a supercar.
I consider this author strongly opinionated, this is a good thing.   For he had a great subject to prove his point.

Though this beauty is sexy and sleek I still find the Bentley GTC convertible at  DFW Elite Car Club a car that can hold up the challenge of exotic car class.

Have fun search the answer.

2008 Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5 SE

All right don’t beat me up on this one.  Though I thought it interesting that the road tester for Auto 123.com compare the sexy and seductive looks of this Altima Coupe to head turning exotic cars.  Or it was stated that this stylish car is as much as a head turner as some of the exotic cars that recently grace the parking lot of Auto123.com.

I have to admit it is a sharp car being an Altima owner myself.  Though I may drive an Altima by day and through out the week by the weekend I’m seeking adventure.  I find my adventure in one or more exotic cars from DFW Elite Auto Rental.

I’m looking forward to my turn behind the wheel of the new Bentley GTC convertible this weekend.

Automotive Art captured from Pictures

As a car enthusiast I’m always looking for different ways to document my adventures in exotics cars. One way I choose to document these beauties is through the use of my digital camera. In the past it was with a 35mm Nikon with all the extra filters and lenses. That was a one serious equipment hauling. As I look back at the pictures I’ve captured I realize that the detail in them is so vivid that it’s absolutely automotive art captured. Talk about being a perfect painting. Then I ask myself how can I get this blown up and in a frame? and not get the grainy distortion that all 35mm pics offer. Well auto enthusiast and automotive art collector I have found an answer Palmieri Concepts.

They transform your pictures into custom artwork using custom photography and digital graphic services. So I guess what I’m saying is those perfect painting pics I got while at the Pebble Beach Concours are about to become my personal wall art. Especially my favorite Lamborghini Gallardo on the streets of Carmel picture.

Then I have my personal adventure pictures from my Drive Your Dream tour.

I have pictures of the exotic cars I got to drive. Can you believe in just one day I drove a new Aston Martin Vantage Roadster, Ferrari F430, a Bentley GT, BMW M6, and my personal favorite the Lamborghini Gallardo.

My personal thanks goes to Dui Lawyer whose blog turned me on to Palmieri Concepts.
